Between the Idea and the Reality:
explorations in design for sustainability

In this talk Professor Walker explores various aspects of social, economic and environmental sustainability and its potential implications for product design. Through a series of conceptual, exploratory designs, possibilities are explored for a more integrated notion of products and technology that include localization, good quality employment, product longevity and maintenance, ephemerality, aesthetic stability, and the creation of a material culture of 'evolving permanence'. Much of Prof. Walker's work also explores design and meaning, including the philosophical and spiritual aspects related to material culture and its design. Examples of Professor Walker's concpetual designs are included throughout the talk.

Professor Walker is Co-Director of ImaginationLancaster, a recently formed creative design lab at Lancaster University in the UK that is rated among the top 3 institutions in the country for research excellence in Design Theory and Design Management. He is Director of the new MA in Sustainability, Innovation and Design and Visiting Professor of Sustainable Design at Kingston University, UK. His award winning research has been presented internationally and his conceptual design work has been exhibited at the Design Museum, London, in Rome, and across Canada.
