演講摘要

The population of the United States of America is growing older. The first baby boomer turned to sixty years old on January 1, 2006. Baby boomers, those who were born between 1946 and 1964, are expected to live longer than any generation before them. There are about 78.2 million of them which is roughly a quarter of the US population. They will need a lot of medical care resources in the near future. In order to provide affordable and comfortable healthcare, projects like Digital Home will be an important part of our medical care system. In this project, homes are equipped with wireless sensor networks and wireless and wired communication devices, to reduce costs and provided better care to the elderly.

The project is to research and develop a friendly and effective home healthcare environment using current technologies, e.g. sensing devices, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), Wireless communication systems, machine learning and intelligence, dynamic data management and so on. We will discuss some of the various issues and challenges we will face under home healthcare environment and give some example projects in this talk.
